Happy New Year!

I would like to wish each and every one of you a very prosperous and Happy New Year!

It simply amazes me how fast years go by now! But as they say, “Time flies when you’re having fun”. I did have fun in 2003. Reflecting back I have accomplished much more than I had ever planned!

Why, just a year ago my site, Work At Home Ideas, never even existed! I started building my website from scratch in February of 2003 and by April it was listed in the search engines. Now I am receiving over 300 unique visitors per day.

Sure, it was a fair amount of work, but you know what? It was actually fun! This is why I recommend so strongly that each and every work at home entrepreneur build their own site. Not only does it give you a sense of accomplishment, but if done well, the search engines will send free targeted traffic to your site!

This year I am embarking on another project. I am using Ken Evoy’s Site Build It! To build an affiliate site. I have not yet decided on the domain name, but will let you know how it goes as the year progresses.

I hope that this newsletter will not only be useful, but also enjoyable as you continue to work at home, or just embark on starting your home business. Here’s to wishing you a most successful and joyous year!

-Dave Wray

Paid Advertising, Part 1

Over the past couple of newsletters I went over a few techniques that anyone could use to advertise their business or products for free. These two methods were free classifieds advertising and free ezine advertising. Both work quite well if you are willing to put in the time and effort to get results!

This newsletter I want to discuss a way to advertise your products or services that costs money. If you do have some money to spend, it is a great way to accelerate your success with your business. The method I will be discussing this week is pay per click search engines.

Pay Per Click Search Engines

What exactly is a pay per click search engine (ppcse), and how can it help your business? The name, “pay per click search engine” is pretty self explanatory. Essentially, it is a place where folks go to search for information/items they are interested in.

The difference between a pay per click search engine (ppcse) and a regular search engine (like Altavista), is that you pay a price to have your product/site listed at a ppcse and you don’t at a regular search engine.

Regular search engines will index your site for free. Search engines such as Altavista, or AllTheWeb will send out robots that will find your site and index your pages.

So, you may ask yourself. “Why not just wait for the robots from the free search engines to come and index your site?”. Well, you could do that, but you would have absolutely no say where they placed your site for certain keywords.

Let me explain. Let say you’ve built a site about birds. Altavista sends out their robot and it indexes your bird site. Altavista then uses their algorithm to determine where your site should place for certain keywords based on relevancy. So, for the keyword, “bird watching”, Altavista may place your site in 10th position. It may also place your site in 100th spot! See, you have absolutely no control over where your site will end up.

That is where ppcse’s are different. They give you and I the ability to bid for placement under certain key phrases.

Let me give you an example. Your site is about birds. You want people to find your site when they type in “bird watching”. So, you bid for that keyword at your ppcse of choice.

You discover that the site in the number one position is paying 20 cents to be there. This site would pay 20 cents each and every time a surfer clicked on his/her listing. The site in second spot is paying 18 cents. The lower down you appear, the less likely a surfer will click on your listing.

You decide that you can afford 19 cents per click to get people to come to your site. Suddenly, you become the one who is in the second position and you push the guy who is paying 18 cents down to third! See how it works now?

And the great thing is that you are not limited to bidding on only one keyword. You can bid on hundreds! You could bid on, “bird cages”, “bird feed”, “bird watching equipment” and on and on.

The pay per click search engines give us small guys a chance to appear at the top of the listings for specific searches. It evens out the playing field so to speak.

A couple words of caution.

1. Know how much you can afford to pay to get a visitor to your site!! Determine how much each visitor is worth.

A crude way to figure this out is to divide the number of visitors you get per week with the amount you make from them that week. That way you get a rough estimate of how much you make from each and every visitor. (Be sure to subtract any costs it took to get them there in the first place!).

If you end up bidding more per visitor at the ppcse’s than you can make per visitor, you will lose money. And everyone knows that that is no fun!

2. The second thing to watch out for is that you do not set your bids too high when you first start out.

Why? Well, let’s say you deposit $25 into your ppcse account. Now, let’s say you bid 20 cents for “bird watching”. What happens if “bird watching” gets 1000 searches that day and 10% of those surfers click on your listing? In one day you will have gone through $20 of your budget!!

It is so easy to go through money too fast at pay per click search engines that I recommend you start out with small bids. Get the feel of how fast you are going through money. If you are comfortable with the amount you are spending, you can then increase your bid to drive more visitors to your site!

A general rule of thumb when using ppcse’s is to bid on as many keywords as possible. This is not to say that you should bid on any old keyword, but the more keywords you have, the more potential traffic you can drive to your site. (And if done correctly, you can usually lower your bids and still get the same amount of traffic).

If you do try and bid on dozens, or hundreds of keywords, make absolutely sure that they are targeted!! Don’t bid on vague terms, or it will cost you money. You don’t want people clicking on your ad out of curiosity, it will just cost you money!

If your site is about birds, do not bid on keywords such as “pets” or “animals”. You will get a lot of clicks, sure, but not targeted ones! These surfers may be looking for information on dogs or cats, not birds.

There are several good pay per click search engines that I use that I would recommend. Here are a few:

Google Adwords
Overture
Kanoodle
7Search
ESpotting

Pay per click search engines are an excellent paid source of advertising. If done correctly you can drive hundreds, if not thousands of interested, targeted prospects to your site for just cents per click!

Again, start out slowly if you are new to pay per click search engines. There is nothing worse than bidding too high and running out of money after just the first day! Bid low to start and then when you are comfortable with what you are doing, raise the bid accordingly.

I use pay per click search engines on a daily basis and recommend them very highly. If you take your time and learn how to use them properly, you will reap the rewards!

MARKETING TIP OF THE WEEK:
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Send A Notepad

This tip runs along the same lines as handing out business cards with your product and business information.

Do you ship products from your home? If so, why not send along some free advertising with your product? It’s a known fact that the more eyes you get your product and business name in front of the better.

This is called branding and is very effective! So, whenever you send a shipment, include a notepad with it. At the bottom of the notepad include your business name, address and any other contact information you wish to include.

Notepads are especially effective. People will write notes and leave them lying around. Friends and family visit and will see these notes all over the place. And guess who’s name and contact info they’ll see? ;)

Notepads aren’t that expensive to make up and they make for a great advertising method. Give this one a try!

Keyword Generators

This free resource hinges itself directly onto my main article above. Keyword generators are an excellent tool to use if you are using pay per click search engines for advertising.

I don’t know about you, but I sometimes have trouble thinking of enough keywords to bid on at the ppcse’s! This is where keyword generators come in handy.

Essentially, all you do is input a keyword, say “birds”, and then press enter. The keyword generator will then spit out other words and phrases similar to birds that people have actually searched for over the past month!

You can quite often find hundreds of additional keywords and phrases using these programs. I use them and have found them to be of immense value!

Here are a couple of free keyword generators:

1. Overture Keyword Tool
2. Espotting Keyword Tool
